Commemorative circle with the names of the prisoners

The centrepiece of the memorial is a symbolic circle with metal beams designed by the winner of the landscape architectural competition – fa. Terra Florida and Jan Sulzer.

This memorial circle bears the names of 1,294 registered persons who suffered in unjustifiable conditions in the local so-called Gypsy camp. One symbolic nameless beam is inscribed in the circle, dedicated to all the unregistered prisoners (the number of registered prisoners does not correspond to the number of actual prisoners – see below).

The list of names that served as the basis for the name beams corresponds to the state of historical knowledge in May 2023 and is available at the reception desk of the Visitor Centre and on the web interface. The concrete walkway encircles the former camp site and symbolizes the empty space created after their deaths.

The individual beams show their full names, dates and places of birth, the period of imprisonment in the camp and their individual fates (transport, release, death, …). This information is supplemented by the prison number that was assigned to the entire families. On the basis of this number (from 1 to 362), the persons are ranked on the circle. When arriving at the commemoration circle by direct route from the Visitors’ Centre, the counterclockwise order on the circle is observed.

The complete interactive list of names can be found in the interactive table here.
